think of a stem with a screen in the bottom, it breaks the smoke into many many many small bubbles instead of the fewer bigger bubbles without it...

basicly it breaks it down into smaller ammounts so it can cool the smoke more effectively and effiecintly (when used in a water/ice bong)

if you have the choice.. definately get it with any bong you get...
