about to plant rooted seeds, what is the safest method?

alright, i germinated 5 seeds for a small cabinet grow. 4 seeds are rooted pretty well, but the 5th hasn't even cracked yet. so i figure screw it, i'll plant the seeds tonight, and just pop the 5th in a pot and let it have a chance.

anyhow, the roots are fairly large, a couple over half an inch, i didn't think they'd take so fast. i don't want to damage the root or cause it too much stress. i read and heard that you should your pots down, then gently lay the sees in and just sprinkle some soil over that. how much water should they get off the jump, and should i soak the first packing of starter soil to begin with?

i messed up my first germination attempt by overwatering, i don't want to hurt them again. any tips appreciated, heading back to google now...

I just use a pencil to poke a hole about 1/2" - 3/4" deep and drop the seed in...I know some people say to make sure the root is facing down but I don't and they seem to find their way. Then just press some dirt over it gently, give it an ounce or two of water and you're on your way.

I've killed off seedlings by overwatering too - now you know what not to do.
