That sucks...

It's one thing to steal someones plants from an outdoor grow (which is still filthy), but a-whole-nother thing to steal someones plants from their home. That is just asking for trouble.

But, I think he possibly could have used less lethal force to deter the thieves. Shoot him in the leg or something. I would suffer for a long time with the death of a 15 year-old on my conscience.

It doesn't say the case is closed and it does say that they need to prove that his LIFE was not in danger (which it probably was not) for him to be left off. I see him being charged anyway, possibly with a lesser charge, and most likely sued for wrongful death by the parents of the boy.

I remember a case several years ago where a man woke up to his house being robbed. By the time he got his gun, the robbers were making their way out the window and running over the front lawn. The man fired and shot one of them in the back of the head. He was charged with murder because his life was not in danger and he had no reasonable belief that the robbers were threatening his life.

Material things are just that...material. They can be re-built, re-purchased, or re-grown. Some things are just not worth killing over.
