LOL.....no problem. With my boy.....the spankings pretty much ended at the age of 5. Seems like there is a bit more to reason with after that age. Before that.....LOL.....it's like the only way they know that the burner hurts is AFTER they touch it. Don't matter how much you said, they HAD to test it on their own. A bit of pain to the ass works just as well in situations pre-5.

Then all is well till the teen years. I told mine that when he felt he was big enough to make his own rules and if he was under legal age we'd step it out in the backyard and see who "the man of the house" was. LOL.....he only tested me out once at the age of 17. I didn't hurt him or leave any bruises but he was well aware that I spared him. Before stating how harsh I was I'd like to point out that his privs were a hell of alot more liberal than 99% of his friends. Rewards for good deeds go hand in hand also.

Parenting is a hard job with hard decisions. It would be real easy to look away or play the Dr. Spock and give out candy and kisses. When they reach adult status they have take orders either from college teachers on their own or employers. The successfull ones aren't spoiled brats that always got their way. When an authority figure states what to do, it's done without the attitude.........THIS is linked back to what they were taught as a youth.

I wouldnt call it abuse but it's also not the best tool to teach with. If the kid did something really bad sometimes that seems like its the only option. You shouldnt be angry when you do it though.

I'll tell ya what worked on me (At least when my grandpa was concerned) This is the first time my grandpa ever got ill enough at us (The kids) to spank, but it certainly worked. This only happened 2-3 times at the most. My grandpa wasn't no joke, lol!

We were playing in my grandpa's 'tobacco' patch, lol! I guess the oldest of us was like 10. He (My grandpa) had told us many times to stay out of his garden, so the verbals had no effect apparently. Anyway we endend up destroying like three plants, and when my grandpa found out, he was furious.

At first he sat us down calmly and told us what he was going to do to us for disobeying him. "All three of you are going to get the belt, but not now" He said "I want you to think about what you did first" This was probably a good thing, my grandpa was/is a VERY big man, and none of us wanted him angry when the punishment came.

Two days go by, and nothing happened. We were all like "He's not going to do anything to us" Well, we were wrong.. ..two days after the incident he calls us on the front porch, and asks if we were ready. Fear consumed me at this point, I can't speak for my brothers, though. Sure enough, off came the belt and one by one he gave us three licks each. Let me tell ya something, that sh!T works!

To think about it for a couple days straight, just wondering when it's gonna happen is pure torture. It was completely mental of course, that belt had nothing on the two, sometimes three, sometimes one day of thinking and fear that followed our disobedience.

Does spanking work? Yes, but not nearly as good as it being combined with this kind of waiting/thinking period. btw, when he spanked us, we sure the fuck felt it! It hurt, but like I said it wasn't nearly as bad as those days of fearful anticipation .. ..

I think some parents go to that "tool" a bit too quickly and chances are they were hit when they were children. (we teach what we were taught)

As a child who was both beaten and spanked, I can say, without a doubt, some part of it is still with me, and is most likely the reason I'm the soft-spoken guy now.

My dad was definitely one of those parents who used that "tool" too much, and I got whipped fairly often. But then again, he had it even worse as a child with his dad...

There were a few times he beat me so bad my ass was so bruised and red, I had to stay home from daycare so no one would turn my parents in for abuse.

If and when I have kids, spanking would be the last, and I mean *last* resort for me. Even seeing a belt or ruler makes me shudder to this day. Plus, I don't want to be the reason my child has emotional problems because I have a problem with beating my kids.

Well...... Let me start by saying! It's Bullshit! My Daddy,Mama,Aunt's and Uncle's all whooped my ass! I spanked my children in moderation! Mostly with my hand.A belt at times! I'll do it again,too! They got that ass whipped cause they deserved it! Everytime I got 1 is was all my fault,even if my sisters did it! I was the oldest so...... Go figure! I should have known better! I did!!!!! My Daddy was the worst I've ever had! Mostly for when I told a lie or was not home when he said! If they outlaw spanking the next generation will not be worth a shit for nothing! Not to mention the parents will be overcrowding the jails!!!! Now the overcrowding is due to the posession laws! Mostly for a small amount of WEED! I say write your congressman and put this to a vote state by stae! That dude on tv today noway has children! He's a FUCKIN' prick! There's my 2 cent's! I'm a better person for all the spankings I've gotten! I even told my Daddy Thank you for every 1 he gave me along the way! I am the person I am today for that reason!

I gotten my shares of spanking, kicks, and belts. I was raised seeing I'd say PG-13 violence. I seen my father hit my mom, and my mom cut my dad. This cycle didn't stop until one day, I decided to hit my father in retaliation for beating me with a belt. I don't consider spanking abuse, but I don't consider it healthy.

I don't think spanking does any good, it's more of a tool used to vent their frustrations than it was teaching a lesson. I inherited the habit for the worst.......rather than solving problems with words, and brains, I resorted to my fists to vent.

I wish I didn't click on this thread, it only reminds me of painful memories....

You clearly have very strong feelings on this subject. Your liberal use of exclamation points certainly left no doubt about that.

I rather doubt the nation is in danger of having spanking outlawed, and I can tell you straight out that there's never going to be a referendum vote on the subject from state to state. Do a little more reading on this subject when you're not feeling so "exclamatory" and you'll find that nearly everyone with training in pediatrics and child psychology agrees that there are better ways to discipline children than hitting them, despite any great benefits you might have derived personally from the practice. Most reasonable people recognize that spanking doesn't necessarily constitue abuse, but child protective authorities generally agree that hitting/beating with objects like belts and paddles and hairbrushes often crosses the line.
