You can also always put the joint out. Joints don't burn much when you're not hitting it. If you roll them right, they work very well. But like I said, if you don't wanna smoke the whole joint, just put it out and save it for later or whenever you'll be smoking again. Simple. Also, if you don't pack a bowl good enough, or do not have a screen, you can waste weed. This is because you will suck in little chunks of bud, and they get in your mouth. If it's mids or schwag you're smoking in a pipe, it could stay cherried for much longer, since it's dry and crumbly.
