More credit to one who knows strains?

Question poll for all you tokers out there:

Does knowing strains really add to your smoking experience, or does it not make the priority list?

Do you have greater respect for someone who knows a lot about strains, or is it just an attribute, since many times, it's hit or miss?

I've got used to knowing what strains im smoking, as the stuff i buy is grown by my dealer i know what it is, and the stuff i grow i buy the seeds for so i know that too.

Strain names dont normally mean anything though, well, not from most dealers anyway.

Yea alot of dealers just throw on bullshit names like "dro". Or if they have no idea with they have they just say its some fire, or dank shit. Gets annoying then they try to overcharge you. I dont deal with jackasses anymore i only have 2 dealers now.

I'd like to know what strain it is.Or at least have an idea of what to expect for a High.Of course, I'm sure I wouldn't say no to any strain.:rastasmoke:

    I think it's 2 seperate issues.
I choose my smoke based on odor/flavor, and based on knowing if it is a good indica with a mellowing, relaxing effect. But I grow my own and that's a given.
On the other hand, I DO have respect for people who bother to do a bit of research and familiarize themselves with strains, and not spread the 'purple haze/ dro' misnomers any more than they already have been... knowing the effects of certain strains is important for a med user and his or her source. My friends who use ganj as an anti-anxiety med would be FUCKED if I gave them some trippy paranoid sativa, and I know that, so in that case it's really important.

i only have 1 reliable source for which i know exactly what im getting, no bullshit, headie nug :rasta: ... but other than that, the other buds around are usually the same or something worse. i have no choice really on what strain i want to buy. that being said, i voted for 'It's a good thing to know, but I'm not concerned.'

im with lip on this one, only those who grow it themselves really seem to know. most of the dealers around my area, don't know and don't care about strains.... i brought it up one time and this group of old heads gave me this lecture about how strains don't even exist....so yeah, unless im getting it from someone who knows what they're talking about and grew it themselves, i dont even bother....just give it the 'ol smell test.

DRO is not a strain it is a shortening of the word hydro which we all know is a growing method and not a strain of Cannabis.

There are so many varieties that it is virtualy impossible to learn them all and with the development of new strains and hybrids the task of knowing them all is beyond anyone.

If you know strains, or at least visual differences in a nug of weed then you can tell what kind of effects it will have. Is it sour diesel or durban poison? Than you know you're getting sativa, and you know you can smoke it in more social settings. Hashplant? Kush? Get ready to be put to sleep in the most relaxing way. Then there are hybrids that can "lean" in either direction.

If buds are big, fat, and dark green, chances are it's indica dominant. Indicas also tend to smell skunky and/or spicier than sativas. If they're sativa they'll generally be smaller, longer buds and a lighter green. They will smell sweet or fruity. Hybrids will display characteristics of both.

There are always exceptions though. I've heard stories of certain landrace sativas that look like dirt schwag, yet give you a fearsome psychedelic high that lasts 5+ hours.
