    hitchhiking

What are your thoughts on hitchhiking, anyone ever done it, or picked someone up who's doing it ?

I hitched 120 miles one time, very interesting time, met some cool ass mothers. Also, every time i've ever seen someone hitching, i've picked them up, also met some cool people doing this. I've never had a bad experience with hitchin, but i know a lot of people that when i tell them i've done it and i've picked people up, look at me like im crazy as a loon.

i picked up this kid while driving into my 'hood. jeebus, he was weird. kept talking about the army like it would impress me. example: 'yeah those AK 47s are pretty heavy when you have to carry them around for a four mile hike''. the funny thing was that i picked him up and he was wearing a Giant Supermarket uniform, not camo. i see his every once in a while in my neighborhood.

I did it a lot when I was young back in the 70's... I have not seen a hitcher in like 10 years in my area... back then there were creeps to,,,it's just that news and info did not spread as fast as it does today,so you did not hear stories of rape and shit... If you can handle your shit go for it,,,I would not suggest a 90 pound defenseless person do it...

I wouldn't hitch hike just because it's hard to trust people in this generation. My dad said when he was younger he would hitch hike to work all the time and people would always give others rides. I try to trust people but I don't think I could hitch hike. Last random people me and my friend asked a favor from robbed the gas station we were at.

I've given rides to people, but i dont think i'd be able to handle myself as a hitcher. I'd probably get my ass kicked or something.

I hitchhiked from Florida to Louisiana once, around 900 miles. I would always juggle in between rides to attract attention and get more rides.

what was once common-place is now so rare that i haven't seen a hitcher in years. for the most part, hitch hiking is as safe as it always was. there have always been the loonies out there and if you keep alert you have little to fear, provided you can handle yourself in a pinch. in all my years of thumbing rides i only had a problem once and a well placed buck knife was enough to get me out of that.

oh yeah, the time i hitched 120 miles, every single person that picked me up was drinking. i had two bottles of whiskey with me in my bag that i was taking swigs of to pass the time while i walked. every person that picked me up offered me a beer. by the time i got to where i was going, i was trashed.

also i think a lot of hitch hiking has to do with where you are. like where i live, i see it more frequently than in and around cities.
