How can i stop my mothers from over growing??

if you have them in square pots you can just take them out of the pot every few months and use a sharp knife to slice off a bit of the rootball on all 4 sides then repot into the same pot and fill in the empty space around the edges with new soil. i always take cuts every 2 weeks or so even if they are not needed, just toss them.
