I was going to use a 600 watt hps with a mh conversion bulb, (I was dead set on it, actually) then I found a great deal on a 1000watt cool tube system with switchable ballast. Now I'm worried about heat issues with this system, as I will be pulling air from the grow room and through the cool tube instead of from a cooler source. (outside room) I'm planing on using a 6" 449 cfm vortex fan, and a 400 cfm rated carbon scrubber with this. Rating: 5

yup, you sure can, but at a lesser quality. If you can find that light system for under $506.00 including shipping let me know because I'm always up to save some money. :thumbsup:

That powerhouse ballast is the coolest running, and quietest on the market. Plus it has an 8 year warrenty. I had to have it, lol!

put a couple of fans at floor level.
i made extra air vents from the blocked off window.
first build a 2"x2" wooden frame around the window.
leave the window open about 4", leave the curtains up, just close them.
leave a 6" gap in the wooden frame where you wanna run your air vent.
fit two 2"x2" wooden frame all along the wall, butting up to the gap so you've now got a 6" channel, (make it as long as you like) cover the end up.
then fit 4" battons every foot or so in the channels (first one against the inside top , next one up against the inside bottom one)and so on, so the air comes through a kinda 's' 's' 's'chicane.this also stops the light coming through.then cover over the top with the same wood you covered the window with.( filler any gaps)
hope this makes sense? this may also cure negative air flow problems.
i've built many growrooms over the years, always glad to help fellow growers.
if it don't make sense maybe i could send you a diagram?
when you fit your charcoal filter( suspended from ceiling by chains?) you can cut a hole in the window board to take the exit tube.

I just gotta figure out how I'm gonna set everything up in there.. ..

I think I'll stick with seeds though. There's just something special about starting from seed. Besides, I don't have a seperate veg chamber for a mother plant.. ..

Yes they do, lol! I had almost gave up on this guy, too! I've never grown indoors before, man. This will be my first go at it, haha

o.k I'm down to a 400 watt switchable, lol! fuck it, I can always upgrade to a bigger system later. I'm gonna make sure I can handle temps before I get a bigger light.. ..

$150.00 off my original estimate. The 400 watt should be plenty in such a small grow space, right? I'm not gonna overkill my first grow, lol!

I didnt even read the whole thread so maybe someone mentioned this already but use a 600 digital HPS ballast. They produce the heat of a 600 watt with nearly the lumens of a 1000 watt. They also can run both HPS and MH bulbs (although they will degrade the MH bulbs faster then a normal magnetic MH system). The ballasts themselves also stay cooler, so if your ballast must be in the room then every bit helps.

That being said, a 6" fan on one 600 watt lamp is going to be MORE then enough. Thats a lot of CFM. Ive run a normal 1000 watt HPS in a room smaller then yours without much problem (except on the really hot days which is where you need 2 fans, one sealed for the light and one for the room). For a room your size, to take full advantage I wouldn't run anything LESS then a 600 digital. A light with 100,000+ lumens, for best results, should really not be used on anything larger then a 3x3, but 4x4 is of course do-able. Not saying you cant get good results with a 400...but atleast make sure its a 400 digital ballast, which produces the lumens of a normal magnetic 600 watt ballast.

For reference, I run a single 6" fan to cool all 4 of my 750 digital ballasts. Granted its sealed, but gives you an idea. In my 5'x7'x5' grow box I run 2 600 digital lights with a single 6" fan, this time pulling air from the grow room like you want to. I have to use a speed controller or my temps get to low. Thats a 175 cubic foot room, yours is not all that much bigger. I like to have a CFM that is bigger then the room incase things get really hot or humid. I use an 1100cfm fan on my 1000cubic feet grow room. It can completely exhaust CO2 and stale air in a little more then a minute. This allows me to only run the fan on short intermittant bursts. Saves energy and other things.

One question.. ..if I go with the 600 watt digital, I'll still need to buy a 600 watt MH converson lamp correct? You can't use a smaller lamp like a 400 in 600 watt ballast, can you?
