Tool has always been my fav band. They really take a unique and spiritual look at music. And alot of their shit goes pretty deep. You know theres different ways of listening to lateralus? Following the Fibonacci sequence (which im not even gonna try to type all out) Which is sort of a mathematical spiral pattern, the track list that lateralus runs on now is different than the band picked. But if you follow the Fibonacci sequence, oooooo jus look it up, it flows nice. Also, time signatures of the main riff in "Lateralus" (9-8-7) also represented a step in the Fibonacci sequence (the sixteenth step, as it turns out, hmmm doesnt A Perfect Circle have a cd named that....). Also Danny Carey, who is an amazing drummer, is an alchemist, so references to that come up alot. Some song lyrics on Lateralus can be interpreted as references to alchemy, especially because the Philosopher's stone often serves as a spiritual metaphor to evolve from a lower state of imperfection and vice (symbolized by the base metals) to a higher state of enlightenment and perfection. References to this spiritual transmutation are:
"Give away the stone. Let the oceans take and transmutate this cold and fated anchor.
Give away the stone. Let the waters kiss and transmutate these leaden grudges into gold." ("The Grudge")
"Black then white are all I see in my infancy, red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me....Lets me see". ("Lateralus")
If seen in this perspective, the part from "Lateralus" can either refer to the four colors of the Philosopher's stone during different phases of creation, or to the colors of the ingredients themselves (i.e. black = mercury, white = salt, yellow = sulphur, red = stone).
And yes, maynard is friends with several comedians. The band greatly admired the late great Bill Hicks, who was a really really great comedian among other things. The whole Ã?nima album has many references to bill hicks through it, not to mention a painting of him on the inside cover. The song Third Eye has a sample of one of his bits in it.
But i feel ive said to much. Breathe.... Breathe..... Look deeper, and open your third eye. Did i mention i like Tool?

I don't like TOOL for two reasons. One, they focus too much on the lyrical and making it for "bright" people to understand aspect instead of creating good riffs and actual music, so it gets pretty boring. Two, most TOOL fans I've met are pretentious assholes who think that Maynard is God and that if you don't enjoy TOOL or insult them in any way, you are an ignorant scumbag. But, I must say "Sober" and "I Know the Pieces Fit" are both great songs.

I don't like both at all really. The TOOL fans I've met in person aren't that bad, but on internet forums they are complete jackasses(I've lost count at the amount of them). Not really that much on this website, but I've seen the Tool worship go on here.
