Depends on where you live, I guess ...and do you mean the USA or the US government? Totally different
Anyway, I don't believe the US government tries to be a global "police" because the "police" is a socially recognized authority; places where authority is non-recognized, yet is imposed with coersion on the population ...well, that's not policeing. It's tyrany (or, as an understatement, "bullying"), and I believe that many countries feel that way when the US gov imposes on their sovereignty. Plus, the police is supposed to be indifferent, and yet the US gov picks and chooses when/where it wants to enforce its ideals and be a self-proclaimed good-guy--usually depends on if it agrees with national interests. Where was the US during the Rwanda genocides?..oh yea, I forgot. Rwanda doesn't have any oil

I think when most Americans see their country getting involved in world affairs they think that they are doing the right thing, although this is often not the case. Propaganda and government lies mean that the US people think they are helping the rest of the world when often they are getting involved when they shouldn't (Vietnam) or ignoring a problem they should be getting involved in (global warming)
