Very simple examples:
Two domestic parters, Jill and Beth, say they have been living together for 20 yrs. Because they are not LEGALLY recognized as a couple, if Jill has a stroke and goes into the hospital;
- Beth does not have the legal right to visit. She can be barred from the hospital by Jill's parents.
- Beth does not have a legal right as far as Jill's course of treatment.
- If Jill dies in the middle of raising a child, Beth does not have the legal right to assume parenting. So not only does she lose her partner, but also the child she helped raise.
