I think you are being smart and looking at this the right way. You dont want to have your life totally ruined by a dui or whatever lame charge they want to hit you with for smoking while driving. Also its a good idea to find out what exactly are the laws for your particular state. Go check out www.norml.com If you click on legal issues that will bring you to a page that has state by state laws on marijuana. (its on the left hand side)
