You're still a citizen of the United States, they're required to give you a passport. This is, of course, unless you're a terrorist or on a terrorist watch list. I know you're not though, most people I know who smoke can barely get off the couch, let alone get involved with terrorism. Have a good vacation brotha!

I used to think the same thing, PatrickHenry, but when I was required to get a passport last year for a work trip, I was informed, after application and fees paid, that I would be denied a passport. No reason was given.
After (much) correspondence and red tape with the US Department of State I was finally issued a passport, but not before I had to supply them with all kinds of "supporting evidence" regarding my identity. I was required to send in a color copy of my 3rd grade class picture, a copy of a picture of me receiving my HS diploma, a copy of my college degree, and a copy of my fraternity composite picture. To this day I don't know why these particular things were the deciding factor, but eventually they gave me one.

OH! Did I mention that my Great Grandfather was from India and that I have a (slightly) middle-eastern-sounding surname?
I was born and raised in Chicago, and until last year had never been out of the country. I have never been arrested.

IMO racial profiling is alive and well at the US Department of State. If you are a minority you will probably have to wade through miles of red tape to get a passport, but you should do it. It's a nice thing to have. It provides undeniable identification.

Visiting this website would be a good first step for you.

Totally real, I'm sorry to hear that dude. My wife is Asian-American and we are having the hardest time obtaining a new social security card for her with my last name because they don't believe who she says she is. They think she's some fresh-off-the-boat. Meanwhile she was born in Los Angeles and speaks perfect english and has a college education. GO F'ing FIGURE!!!! Land of the free; my ass!
