Islamist terrorists pose the greatest threat to Britain's security since the Second World War, the Metropolitan Police Commissioner has warned.

With police and security services on heightened alert for a possible attack over Christmas and the New Year, Sir Ian Blair echoed fears in the intelligence community that the risk of an atrocity has increased substantially in recent months.

He said he had no specific intelligence about a plot to target Britain over the holiday period, but added: "The threat of another terrorist attempt is ever present. Christmas is a period when that might happen. We have no specific intelligence to do [with] that."

He added: "There was a terrorist plot in Germany against one of their Christmas markets in 2002, so it's a possibility."

Sir Ian also said the danger to the public was of an "unparalleled nature and growing".

"It is a far graver threat in terms of civilians than either the Cold War or the Second World War," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. "You have to go back to that threat - it's a much graver threat than that posed by Irish Republican terrorism."

The commissioner said the IRA usually did not want to cause mass casualties, did not want its attackers to die, gave warnings and was "heavily penetrated" by intelligence agents. "None of those four applies with al-Qa'ida and its affiliates," he said.

Sir Ian also acknowledged that efforts to infilitrate terrorist cells were at an early stage.

"It took 20 years to penetrate the IRA and I have no doubt the intelligence services will be attempting that now, but it is a more difficult and a much more recent phenomenon. Therefore some of the techniques we just do not have."

Last month, Dame Eliza Manningham-Buller, the MI5 director general, disclosed that the agency was tracking more than 1,600 members of terrorist cells and was monitoring 30 major plots.

John Reid, the Home Secretary, has also repeatedly warned that a terrorist attack in Britain is "highly likely". Sir Ian defended the bungled police raid in Forest Gate, east London, in June when a man was shot and injured by officers who were hunting for terrorist materials.

"We have apologised for the fact we did not find what we were looking for."

The commissioner also said the police had learnt their lesson from Forest Gate when they thwarted an alleged plot in August to blow up transatlantic airliners. He said: "[We made] it clear to the public the scale of the threat we had uncovered, [the threat] we thought we had uncovered, and why we had to move forward."

If I remember my literature correctly, there was a story in the Book of Genesis in the Bible about a certain man named Noah and an impending flood. The people saw Noah building an ark and they scoffed at Noah because it never rained on the Earth and they thought he was crazy. Well, indeed the flood waters came and the people who scoffed were all killed.

Regarding Noah and the Ark

They do have a lot in common. That story isn't true either and yet a lot of people believe it.

Noah's ark

Noah's ark is the boat built by the Biblical character Noah. At the command of God, according to the story, Noah was to build a boat that could accommodate his extended family, about 50,000 species of animals, and about one million species of insects. The craft had to be constructed to endure a divinely planned universal flood aimed at destroying every other person and animal on earth (except, I suppose, those animals whose habitat is liquid).

������.let's grant that Noah was able to collect all the birds and mammals, reptiles, and amphibians, and a couple of million insects that he is said to have gathered together on his boat. There is still the problem of keeping the animals from eating one another. Or, are we to believe that the lion was lying down with the lamb on the ark? Did the carnivores become vegetarians for the duration of the flood? How did he keep the birds from eating the insects? Perhaps the ark was stocked with foods for all the animals. After all, if Noah could engineer the building of a boat which could hold all those animals, it would have been a small feat to add room to store enough food to last for more than six months. Of course, Noah would have to store enough food for himself and his family, too. But these would have been minor details to such a man with such a plan guided by God.

Still, it seems difficult to imagine how such a small crew could feed all these animals in a single day. There is just Noah, his wife, their three sons and three daughters-in-law. The "daily" rounds would take years, it seems. Delicacy forbids me from mentioning the problems of the "clean-up" detail, but I would have to say that if the noise of all those animals didn't drive Noah insane (not to mention the insect bites), the smell should have killed him. At least they didn't have to worry about water to drink. God provided water in abundance.

Finally, belief in the universal flood or even belief in the building of the ark are not nearly as strange as the belief that this event of mass destruction was the direct work of the Creator to show anger at people who would dare to enjoy this life and have a good time rather than spend all their free time worshipping the Almighty.
