This is bound to catch some flames. Burn baby, burn. And I am gonna ramble, so piss on that if you so desire.
I paid $50 for an 1/8 last night. That seems to be the going rate for decent smokage. It smelled really green though, yet it is compacted buds. Defintely a sativa strain, heady/trippy high, no couch lock. Very likely this is a locally grown product. I live in a semi-tropical climate, where the sativa strain is native. This does have some stems in it and I even found at least one seed (wthout even looking for any, I just broke some up so I could smoke it). Granted, growers may have nurtured this shit, but this weed is most likely locally grown shit, it's not properly cured, and was harvested a little too early (looking at the buds, early by a little, couple weeks anyway, I'd guess). So I did a little quick math, $50 an 1/8, times 8 = $450/oz. Sativa gets pretty big, so conservatively average about 3/4 lb./plant. So thats $5400 per plant. Maybe it was only 100 females out of maybe a 200 plant grow. So thats a $54,000 little enterprize. Now figure the grower sold some in quatity, knocking down that profit, and he probably put in some money in fertilizers and there's had to be other growing costs. so we'll just say maybe he got at least $30,000 from that little grow. NO tax, or FICA, or any Uncle Sam bullshit. Pure pofit. Damn. You may have seen in the news lately that marijuana was the US's #1 cash crop in 2006. Well, no shit.
Now, don't get me wrong. This is good smoke. And I like sativa, for fun. Still my back likes indica better, dang it. I don't much care to pay $50 an 1/8, but I figure you have to pay more if you want really want good smoke. But this little deal here sucks, yet it seems pretty common. And it looks like a wave of the future, especially with those kind of profits to be had. For the near future anyway. I thought before, and still feel, that any grower who uses other people's property without the owner's knowledge or using all that government owned land for his grow, is open to losing some or not all his crop to anyone or anything that stumbles across it. Especially when local dirt growers can get huge profits off an indigenous gift from mother nature and are really only out to make profits from that gift. The God Almighty buck, and the that love of money, sucks another thing down it's abyssmal hole. I got some Fox Farm Ocean Forest coming that's supposed to be delivered here today. I will get a good grow with good smoke yet, damnit, it's not easy (hopefully the 3rd time around is lucky, but I've learned a lot what not to do). Besides venting a lttle, I just wanna say, this huge profit making thing out there is just another reason people should just grow there own. I think what pisses me off the most about this whole deal, is that those that are doing this assume people are so stupid they won't figure this simple shit out. That means they think I'm stupid and that's just insulting. Now, I know I'm stupid, but that's for me to say. Not other assholes to assume.

This is just my guess, but I think that's why 99.9% of all growers started growing. It's certainly at the top of my list of reasons why I started growing my own.

$50 for an 1/8 is fuckin ridiculous. You know it. I know it. And the guy who sold it to you knows it. But as long as people like you keep giving him that much money, he will keep demanding that much money.

Your math is a little too quick. $50 X 1/8 = $400, not 450. And $100/qtr oz is pretty standard around here (and most places) for the high quality flowers so you got an honest deal...imho. Most of us grow our own so we know what we're smoking and only have to pay a fraction of street prices, not for the greed.

That's fuckin ridiculous no matter what the quality. Quality does not effect the cost of production. I grow quality pot and it doesn't cost me shit to grow it. If I was a dealer I could put every other dealer out of business simply by offering everyone reasonable prices. But I'm not a dealer.
