Also tar is a lipid (fat) soluble particle which means that its hydrophobic (scared of water) and does not dissolve well or even at all in water. A small amount gets mixed with the bubbles created when drawing on the bong and gets stuck to the sides of the bong (that brown crud that sticks to the glass above the level of the water). Its mainly this method of the tar sticking to the sides that helps cut down on total tar in a bongs smoke. (I like the rice idea!!!!) Now you'd need a better solvent to filter out the tar (which has most of the cancer causing agents) but that'd mean using something like alcohol which would be a bad idea due to fires etc... Of course making a drink with the alcohol afterwards would give a pretty big kick!!!

Sorry if this does'nt reassure you but the only safe way to avoid the carcinogens in weed is to avoid the weed altogether (not gonna happen)

PS: Smoke from cannabis contains about 60 or so known carcinogens of which about 10 or so are known to cause cancer in humans and the rest are assumed to cause cancer.
I thought all carcinogens were eliminated while vaporizing...

Good info though, i've heard about stuides from norml but forget what they found out. At least it filters out some of the carcinogens, better then a pipe imo. I love bongs way too much to stop or use a different method. Even if there are carcinogens still left there, i've never heard of anyone getting cancer from cannabis.

Also, do you consume carcinogens if you eat it? I'm curious.

no you don't consume carcinogens from eating it, (correct me i'm wrong anyone, but i'm pretty damned sure of this...) no a water bong does not filter out all the carcinogens, and actually according to those nomrl studies, it showed it was even taking away 'the high' (i want to say thc here, but someone will come back and say thc isn't the only thing that gets you high, which i know, but i can't think of the right word to use in this situation..)

Yeah, that's right. I don't think you consume carcinogens while eating it either i just wasn't 100% sure. Well, norml can say what they like, i know i get high as hell from my bong and that's the way it will continue

you don't consume any carcinogens from eating except if there were chemicals used on the plant or on the soil containing them. marijuana itself has positive nutritional values when ingested.

vaporizing eliminates the vast marjority (95% i believe) of carcinogens, not to mention that it is tar-free, when used properly. it however does not release all the different kinds of cannabinols present, though it does release the main one that is attributed for causing the desired effects (delt-9-tetrahydrocannibinol).

ice in the bong technically is a less healthy smoke, but is nice as it is easy on your throat. it is less healthy because it allows you to pull more smoke in, resulting in more tissue irritation. it allows you to hold it longer, also leading to more irritation. it also causes parts of the lungs to contract, pulling in more THC as well as carcinogens. water in general also strips the smoke of some THC, which sucks to lose! haha

there are a couple other negative aspects that have been suggested by research that i cannot recall right now as my mind has shutdown to recharge after this semester.

    i might try that
No no no. Hot water and ice mixed together creates a vapor that increases pressure. There is a good chance your glass bong will crack or break if you do that. I once put wine glasses that came from the freezing cold outside, inside a hot dishwasher, and they all exploded as soon as it turned on. So no, I would avoid mixing those together.

I think if you used warm water (instead of boiling) and ice you should be okay. Its when there is an EXTREME amount of differance in temperature that you get cracking. Also, I dont know about you but my bongs are alot thicker than wine glasses.

    Hi,

Vapourizing is definately the best way to 'smoke' it. There have not been peer reviewed studies of this method of using it but logic states that since the vegetable matter is not burnt then there would be much less chance for carcinogens to enter the lungs. Personally I smoke spliffs, but do so knowing the danger I put myself in and not really caring, ... much. Since I don't drink alcohol and smoke, and since I eat pretty healthly I figure I can chance it. <-- Foolish, but there you go!

Eating it is the safest way to consume it and has never been even suggested as an unsafe thing to do. The human body (all bodies actually) are the best and most efficient chemical processing plants ever made in the known universe. The body uses 100% of the THC when you eat weed because of the way its processed. First your chewing (spit) adds a enzyme which starts to break down the plant matter (but not the THC yet) then you swallow it and the gastric acid / enzymes and churning of your stomach makes it into a paste which then gets moved into the proximal intestines which then add more enzymes that break it down and bile which starts to digest the THC. Individual molecules of THC cross the intestinal barrier and enter the blood stream. From there they hit all tissues of the body but collect in the brain tissues and then act as all THC does and prevent the reuptake of neurotransmitter chemicals in the brain giving an excess of these chemicals and that nice stoned feeling we like.

I'll go on record here and say that carcinogens are most frequently found in matter after we burn it and it creates smoke. Eating stuff (unless its meat) generally doesn't add carcinogens to our systems. Meat does because animals tend to aggregate chemicals from the lower aspects of the food cycle and concentrate them in their flesh. Plant matter is a primary producer of food and so unless the soil or air is contaminated don't pull these bad chemicals into their systems and then we don't eat them. However, many things cause cancer. The thing that's doing us the most harm is the fact that we breath oxygen!! O2 does terrible things inside the tissues, creating free radicals that cause mutation in our DNA. But, fuck it, you're not gonna stop breathing are you!?!?

Well hope that helps you out.

    Dude,

Not a problem. Water vapour is very VERY good for your lungs!!!! I give nebulized (vapourized) salt water to patients every day of my life to keep them alive!!
