Grandma in Pain
I need some ideas about how to get my oma (dutch for grandma) to use marijuana for the pain she is in. She has severe arthritis and tendonitis in both of her arms, and has been prescribed Oxycodon for her pain. She cannot sleep for longer than an hour at a time because the pain wakes her up. She isn't very old, and is very active and otherwise very healthy for her age. Arthritis and tendonitis won't kill her, but the decrease in the quality of her life and the meds she has been prescribed might. I hate the current medical system right now; how it only treats symptoms and never works to prevent diseases. It also rarely discusses lifestyle changes that could help a person out. I know a guy who had gout, and was able to clear it up in two weeks by changing his diet, whereas his dad had got it previous and is now on dialysis to help with his failing kidneys and liver due to all the medication he has been prescribed.
I would be very surprised if cannabis didn't help with my oma's pain and sleeplessness, so I want her to try it. I doubt she would go for it knowingly, so I guess I will have to try to get her to use it without her knowledge (is that wrong, given the circumstances and what she has to gain?). Cooking with bud is probably the best idea I can think of, but she might become suspicious or at the very least confused, if I tell her that eating a brownie every evening will help her sleep better. lol. Can anyone think of something to help me out?dutch.lover Reviewed by dutch.lover on . I think I have to agree with ya,Dutch.Your gramma is more likely than not, from the old school. You didnt say how old she is.I am 50 yo,and I have degenerative arthritis in my entire skelatal system.Spinal fusion and all that happy crap.More surgerys to come.I started out taking oxy this and oxy that, norco, demerol, morphine sulfate, soma, even dilaudid.Four years I took that crap.It made me a drooling, babbling, idiot. It didnt do a thing for the pain.I started using weed medicinally two years ago,and I havent looked back since. It literally erases the pain.Completely gone.I am a true believer. Now,back to gramma. What I would do is make a batch of brownies, set them out,she will have one or two,and watch her.Make sure she is ok.Ill bet ya money she will get some decent rest the very first nite.Seems kinda sneaky, but she will notice the difference all on her own.Once she sees how it helps, she will slowly come around.Good luck to ya.Ill say a prayer for your gramma.I know just how she feels.Let me know how it works out.

I think you should let her try a batch with her permission. Don't sneak them in, that's dishonest. Keep trying to convince her that cannabis is truly a good medicine for pain relief. Show articles, testimonials from other patients with similar ailments.
For my cancer, I was prescribed 12 different drugs for various ailments, including back pain from having a 10cm tumor wedged by my kidneys, Methadone, Hydromorphone, Zofran, Dytripaline etc.
Halfway through chemotherapy, I didn't have to take anymore pharaceuticals because I realized ganja did a better job for relief than all of them combined. It's a crime that people aren't allowed to use cannabis legally for medical use.Happiness only real when shared

"It's a crime that people aren't allowed to use cannabis legally for medical use." I completely agree. It truly pains me to see all the suffering some people go through, when they could just be told to try smoking weed. I read in a book called "Benefits of Marijuana" by Joan Bello, that some doctors actually tell their patients to try weed, and they are disappointed that they can't prescribe it legally. Anyways, I have really enjoyed the suggestions you all have made so far, and I am going to start putting together all the research and knowledge I have acquired on cannabis' medicinal uses to present to her soon. I will be seeing her Saturday. I have been speaking to my mom about this (my oma's daughter) and she thinks weed would be a good idea for my oma as well, so I think it would be a good idea if both her and I speak to her about it. Thanks for your help and support so far.

Dutch Lover,
I applaud your decision to inform her and let her make her own choice. Before thinking about dosing someone else...a person should all think back to their first euphoric experience with cannabis and then ask themselves what that experience would have been like had that feeling come out of nowhere & had no explanation that you could fathom? Not good....and certainly not a way to introduce someone to such a wonderful plant.
I'm a chronic pain patient/medical marijuana patient here in the US...I'll spare you the details but I will say that if she is in as much pain as you say she is I believe she will willlingly try cannabis. I know there are days when I'd try anything...and I know I'm not alone in that feeling...
good luck in your quest. (and be prepared to buy some gardening tools if she digs it!)

I'm glad you have your Mom's support in this, it will make it a lot easier! I have put in a few articles that are readable-
pain - http://www.news.net/print_article.asp?id=17995
arthritis (and more)- http://ccrmg.org/journal/04spr/conditions.html
sleep modulation - http://marijuana.researchtoday.net/archive/3/8/
arthritis- http://bentham.org/ctmc/contabs/ctmc6-13.htm#8
If you need more, just run a search on cannabis arthritis and you will get more than you need! NORML and EROWID both have a lot of info. I'm a medical user in California and I'm 59. Once you convince Oma to try it in a brownie, think seriously about getting her a vaporizer (the little Vapor Brothers types are nice and not TOO expensive). She doesn't need to mess her lungs up and too many brownies put on the pounds! By the way, vaped cannabis can be reused in brownies- recycling at its best! - Granny Storm Crow :stoned:\"If the truth won\'t do, then something is wrong!\"

Thanks granny and backhash. I really hope she decides to try it, I am going to work really hard to build my case for the medicinal benefits of cannabis. I have read a lot about it, so now I just need to go through and organize all the info I have. Thanks for the links btw. I will let you know how it goes.
