yeah ecky thats my trade. berntout ive been a bricky 25yrs now,its given me a healthy wage,bit shit this time of year with the weather but in the summer its ok,i work 4 a small builder i earn £150 a day and am supplied with a van,private work wkends i charge anything from £250 a day 4 bricklaying upto a £1000 a day 4 structual work,so you can earn a decent wage once good enough.a few tips,get some bricks and practice building corners as much as poss if u start to go out of plumb correct immediately dont just carry on if ur corners r wright evering will b right,dont worry about speed that will come in time,spread ur muck bed evenly and not to big its all in the wrist action,always keep half bond and gage,once u have the basics try and get a job on site as a bricky improver,pay will b poor but u will learn more in 6mths on site than u will 3 yrs in college good luck and if u have any questions i will only b to pleased to help

the uk is flooded with (so called) brickys from eastern europe
uk new build houseing has been on the slack since aug 05
ive had loads gangs calling on my jobs looking for work all year
tarmac,cellcon and others are now makeing preformed brickwork panals, thinjoint blockwork and the like to do away with problems and agrovation involved with masonary constructiion
im not saying dont do it but its gona be tough times for uk construction industry over the next 5 years

especialy for the young and underskilled

they been doing them panals for years same as timber structure,and concrete prefab,i personally dont think it will ever take over. on the point u made about gangs calling looking for work,all i can say is they cant be anygood,i have people approach me asking if i can do some work for them not the other way round,but if i did need some work 5 mins on the phone and id have some,theres a shortage of good brickys if ur good at your trade u will always have work:jointsmile:

i layed bricks for two years almost... droped out like a wanker.. but i have have the course under so i canpick i t up later on in life... yes its good money for when your older... but i dont want to be brickin till im sixty.. or untill im 25.. i just didnt see it .. so i bumed out and got an apprenticship in a fancy golf club in lisburn/belfast.. as a chef.. last year i finished nvq2 . this year im doing nvql3 and its ok.. money isnt bad .. about 8 ph for chef departe.. i love cooking much more than laying bricks... but the cash is not as good.. and its much easier.. but hey do what you want... its a big mans trade .. like myself...

Its prob the best trade. fair play to ya mate how long runnin, my da and three uncles and 2 grandas are/wer brickis.. feels cat that im not doing it nemore..
i used too smoke a spliff with one of the bosses on 5 story scaff.. indy as hell but it gets ya baked... nice cuppa.. greeeat
