I used to use a screen just because I would hate ever getting bud in my mouth from my bowl, but I finally stopped just because its so nice and easy to just blow the ash out after your done and you really dont need one and sometimes they will actually prevent some of the air going through, expecially since they will build up resin on them after a while.

i still can, doesn't happen anywhere near as often as with a clean pipe, but still happens nonetheless... ash isn't that bad, but what IS bad is when you suck in some liquidy resin.... ~gag~

Rip off a tiny piece of rolling paper and softly ball it up and drop it in the bottom of the bowl..

im quite surprised at all the ridiculous suggestions in this thread... I by no means consider myself a cannabis connoisseur, but Ive only used a screen in a glass piece once, besides my bubbler, which has an abnormally large hole in the bottom, it's like 3/16" or 1/4" across, and it was because I was smoking nothing but keif and leftover stuff from the bottom of my grinder, I usually just put a big enough nug to not fall through at the bottom and pack around that to fill up the bowl in my dry pieces. If you have anything other than pure shake, a screen isnt really necessary in almost any glass piece.
