you can try to repel the deer with the conventional methods. Get a couple of bags of hair from a beauty salon and keep it spread under the plants. If you have a zoo nearby you can ask for big cat skat to spread around your plants. Probably easier to get the catamount turds than fool with the bucket in a tree imo.
