You don't need one on blunts, because the cigar leaf is strong enough, where as regular jay papers often are hard to keep open.

you don't need to if you roll it right and spread it evenly. i've been rolling blunts for a while and recently i've been roll almost perfect ones that hit fantastic. there's so much smoke that i've been able to blow donut size o's
