I only use Promix. It is a soiless mix w/ no nutes added. I recommend you don't use outdoor soil for growing indoors. There can be mold, insects or any number of nasty things outdoors that you don't want indoors. Also outdoor soil is usually mostly clay (which sounds like what yours is) and does not drain fast enough. The price of a bag of potting soil is small compared to the loss of a crop. I recommend that beginners start with Promix. Because it is inert there is no guessing of how much nutes to add. You have total control of your nutrient solution and levels. Too often over nutrition occurs when nutes are added to a prefertilized potting soil.

Don't water everyday. The plants like to dry out in between waterings. Not too dry that they wilt, but dry so that the pot is very light to pick up. If the pot is dry, judging by the weight of the pot, give a good watering till it is totally drenched and water trickles out of the bottom. Don't water again until it is dry, usually about 2-3 days depending on both plant and pot size. Let the pot dry out before every watering.
