    Regional Stereotypes (International Posters Please!)

So I was wondering what your regional stereotypes and predispositions are.

Example: I live in Maine. We think that New Jersey is gross. We think that people in the southern states are raging lunatics. We think that Boston, MA is a party city.

I'm very interested in what international posters have to say as well.

Im from the south, and around here people think that WVA is a bunch of uneducated hillbilles among other things you guys shuold know the jokes, and they think people from the north are stuck up, rude people. And around here (NC) they think Va and Wva is the same thing which really bugs me cause Im from VA.

I dont think like that but alot of people here do. I still dont understand how you can lable a whole state, race, or country based on a small population that they have come in contact with.

I'm from Texas...a lot of people around here would not be opposed to Texas being a Republic (independent from the USA) rather than a state. This desire kinda causes us to have contempt for outsiders, and perhaps a bit of fear as well. It is appropriate to label anyone outside of Texas as a "Yank" or "Yankee." We generally view all people from other states in this light. The only exception might be folks from Louisiana, and more specifically those from New Orleans...some people would rather they go back to Louisiana rather than stay here as refugees. I have heard them called "Thugs" and "Crackheads" among other things.

And internationally, we see the French as Socialist Bastards...but that might be a consensus throughout America. Also the phrase, "Bomb Canada" is normally not considered absurd...although I don't know what the reason for this is.

We're just discussing the prevalence of stereotypes in different parts of the world. Turning a blind eye to a problem may be convenient...but bringing these stereotypes, most of which have little or no truth to them, into a public forum is the first step to dispelling them.
