when i buy my seeds i'am very careful and have darn close to 100% germ rate. fill some 20 oz dixie cups (available everywhere) with a 50-50 mix of perlite and vermiculite. the 20 oz dixie cups are good because the taproot is given the necessary 4" of space to grow before hitting bottom. (this results in more females than if given less than 4" to develop) each seed has a pointy end and a dimpled end. the taproot comes from the dimpled end. so take each seed pointy side down and press gently till seed is approximately 1/4" deep. replace the little hole with some dirt and do not pat it down. i then place each cup which has 5-7 holes along the bottom edge and the bottom of the cup in a big tray. fill the tray with 2-3" of plain water with vitamin B additive and warm from the bottom with a heat source making sure the temp does not get to high. within 5 days you should see all your seeds. also if you are starting seeds in anything with fertilizers you will have lower or slower germination rates.
