Regarding the variety of materials that were in the area of the WTC: Just about everything possible was blown to smithereens. Of course there were oils, chemicals, gas, building materials, etc. It was like a whole small city went up, with the resulting disasters. Since nothing of this magnitude ever happened before, it was unpredictable.

One thing that was predicted was the collapse. I met an architect on the way home, on 9/11, and he told me that they would collapse straight down because the buildings' support was destroyed by the heat.
