I think he was stupid. I grew up 10 miles from the nearest paved road, 25 miles from any city limit. Not exaggerated. Down here though, its the heat that kills you. Anyway, driving a Saab through the snow, Stupid. Getting *SO* lost that you don't see a car for 6+ days, Stupid. Leaving the car without adequate clothing (food or not, we know there is plenty of water), Stupid. LEAVING THE ROAD was the dumbest thing i think I have ever heard. From what I have heard, he followed this drainage thing for 8 miles southwest, then turned east which ended in some ravine less than a mile from the car. Call me crazy, but I think i would rather walk 8 miles on snow covered roads than up and down a mountain.

With the risk of sounding like an asshole, I just hope that when I die, I don't go out like that and be labeled an idiot. But yeah, its sad...he shouldn't have taken his pants off.

You are 100% right.
The word, "asian" isnt the issue in this matter. He was an American, who just happened to be of Asian decent.
James has more than two kids who are alive. James has a whole city that encompasses him, his family, and the love and bravery he showed his family.
Thats more than most in this forum could ever hope for.
James was not a dumb man. He was a desperate man trying his best to save those he loved.
I hear people in this forum who's biggest concern in their lives is getting caught with pot. I hope they understand that life has more challenges than that. Those people couldnt walk a step in James shoes.
RIP , James. You were a good father. A good husband. And a beautiful human being.

i dont know why some people are making this guy out to be some sort of hero, he's not a hero, he died. the only thing he accomplished was dying. its not a tragedy either, the media uses that term in too much in general and its lost its meaning.
what we have here is a case of some californian deciding to go camping and does all the wrong things and gets himself killed because of it. plain and simple.

MastaChronic, he was a hero. I have skimmed all these posts and noticed that no one has mentioned how the searchers found his family. They followed his footsteps which led them to his wife and children. He was a hero for leaving them to try to get help, even though he failed to get to his destination (whatever that was) his actions resulted in his family being saved. that sounds pretty heroic to me.
