Snoring is awful. My mom carries too much extra weight and has sleep apnea but refuses to use her CPAP machine, and she snores so loudly it's almost impossible to sleep in the same house with her. Says she can't get used to the CPAP. Yet her BP continues to go up and her heart function continues to deteriorate. It's a very frustrating thing to witness. And the rest of us, including my husband, can talk till we're blue in the face. But still she won't do what she needs to do. My mom is one of the chief reasons I'm very attentive to my own health and weight. I never want to end up like her. OK, sorry, that wasn't a tip or suggestion. I just needed to vent.

I have a close friend whose husband snores loudly, and he doesn't have sleep apnea because he's been tested. He just has loose skin in the back of his throat that makes the noise worse. I recently read that there are new fixes for snoring that involve laser surgeries, but I also read a tip in a women's magazine a while back that my friend used on her husband, and it worked well. This tip was for how to prevent husbands/partners from sleeping on their backs, which tends to be where snoring is the worst. You take a tennis ball and put it into a sock of some kind. Then you sew the sock holding the tennis ball onto the center back of your husband/partner's pajama shirt, approximately between the shoulder blades. That makes an uncomfortable bump when he tries to sleep on his back, and he'll roll onto his side or stomach instead, which eases the snoring.

This would be a problem for my husband, who doesn't wear PJs or a t-shirt or anything when he sleeps. But if he ever begins to snore, that won't stop me. I'll just suture the tennis-ball sock to his skin!
