It's the breathing.. He went in his sleep, but after years of cancer BS.. Finally, he gave up.. He fell asleep and an hour later, the death growl thingy.. It looked kindof peaceful, but the sound was ICE cold.. Colder than ice.. Shivering.. When you hear that sound, you know the person is dead.
I watched my grandfather die in much the same way when I was 8. Pale, asleep, and the soft hiss of a final breath. There wasn't much fanfare.

We talk about souls, but as far as I know, and as far as science tells me, when your body ceases to function and your brain is a dead hunk of meat, whoever you were is gone.

Of course I'm fascinated by the idea of a soul, by the idea of an afterlife. I just can't let myself take that irrational leap.
