    Sad situation

I put ten recently purchased (from a very reputable store in Amsterdam) Blue Haze seeds in a lukewarm glass of water for a few days until they all sank, and then planted them in nice seed start mix and with a lovely warming pad...and only 4 germinated, and of those 4, one is a runt that I doubt will survive. So I waited a few more days, then I gently exhumed the seeds that weren't coming up- and they looked the same as they did when I planted them! So I plunked them back into the water and put it in a warm dark place- I guess if they sprout, yippee, and if they don't, I can keep my fingers crossed about the 3 strong babies I have.
This seems like a pretty low ratio of viable seeds- were they bad seeds, or was I a bad mother?
    I am sad

Sorry about your bad luck with the seeds. Maybe they were just a bad batch, I don't know. Don't give up on those others, though, till you're sure they are dead.

Get rid of that heat mat with the seedlings. Keep them at or just below room temperature. I have had good success getting females by keeping them on the cool side (65-68) for the first three weeks of their life.

If you do end up with a male and female consider making a batch of seeds for yourself just in case of emergency and as a way to store genetics. When you get to that point I will be happy to help you.

    Well Liberiamom,

I would say you need to relax on your technique. I too use the glass of water method. I only add soil after the seeds have cracked open and sprouted. Assuming they will germinate simply because they sink is where you failed. Now that you know this you can progress onwards. I would assume that those seeds were bad therefore you can clone what you have and live happily everafter.

Thanks gentlefolk, for your advice- but is there any hope for the ungerminated seeds I plucked from the soil? They aren't squishy or anything; they look normal. If I keep them in a glass of warm water covered and dark, is it possible they might still sprout? How long should I give them before pulling the plug?

My babies are in the basement, so will it still be okay to remove the heat pad- it gets a little chilly down there, and I have two fans blowing (the stems are shaking a little, that's not too strong is it?) Am I too rough?

When do I need to move them to pots? They are currently in one of those
seed trays with individual 1 inch holes. What is the best size pot for their first transplant?

Sorry for all the questions, but I don't want to do more harm. I already bonked my largest seedling with the watering can, but it didn't break or anything and is doing fine.
