So, to dispel this common rumor
You know how some people don't get high their first time? Well, I had been reading that it was because the Cannabinoid receptors aren't active yet. Well, that isn't true. We have the cannabinoid receptors because we have endocannabinoids that use these receptors. THC just happens to be an agonist of these molecules. These receptors are always active due the fact that endocannabinoids are important in regulation of important bodily functions. THC binding to these receptors don't need a "warm up" period to percieve THC.
Cannabinoid receptors are the most abundant receptor type in the human nervous system. Weird? :smokin:
Oh, this was info I learned for my Neurophysiology class. It's in my textbook and in a Scientific American article from 2004.
I think the reason people don't get high is basically because they smoked wrong/not enough. It might even have something to do with setting and mind set. But, not the cannabinoid receptors...misspotn Reviewed by misspotn on . So, to dispel this common rumor You know how some people don't get high their first time? I think it may be they dont know what it feels like, or are waiting for it and never realise they are high.

interesting... not saying what you read wasn't correct but i would really wonder the cause of the myth... i just introduced a cigarette smoker to bud so she knew how to inhale... she didn't show any signs of being high at all, whether outward physical, coordination, thought process, etc.
we tried again later that week with the same results. then we tried a third time at the start of the next week and she got knocked on her ass... she was definitely inhaling correct the whole time, same bong, same bud... hmmmmmm... i would doubt it being psychosomatic as well because there would be nothing to change her expectations suddenly from the 2nd to the 3rd smoke.\"keep on living, keep on loving, keep on smoking\" ~cody chesnutt

Well, it could be psychosomatic because the first few times she was probably worried or paranoid about it. I know that sometimes I get a lot more fucked up than others when I have smoked so much more. It's weird I really do think it all depends on the mood/setting. Oh and lack of sleep hahaha. I don't know though. Been so long since I smoked the first time. I remember it but I had smoked a 7gram blunt with my brother on my b-day so I was baked my first.

I think it is possible that the individuals who don't get high are suffering from an endocannabinoid deficiency. The THC doesn't have a chance to reach their brains! All of their cells are hungry for endocannabinoids like anandamide (sp?) that our body is supposed to make. The THC is grabbed up by the millions of cells that it has to get by before getting to the brain. Once the other cells get fed, then the brain can get some. Here's an article about endocannabinoid deficiency. http://www.freedomtoexhale.com/clinical.pdf

I find Storm Crow's endocannabinoid deficiency explanation very plausible. But, to be honest, I still find the cannabinoid receptor "warm up" theory plausible, too, especially after talking to my med school neuroscience professor about this same topic. Yes, we have an endocannabinoid system inherent in our bodies and brains that is ready to respond to the endocannabinoids we get in, say breast milk, to name some of the first ingested endocannabinoids. But my professor's theory, which he said was borne out of a similar response by some people to opioids, is that externally ingested/smoked cannabinoids may still elicit a different response--or require a warm-up period--from the way natural endocannabinoids affect those inherent receptors. The same thing happens, he says, to people's opioid receptors, which are inherent in our brains and bodies us but which, in some, respond differently to ingestion of external natural or synthetic opioids, depending on how well they've been acclimated.
So I'm still going to buy into the delayed-awakening receptor theory. I was one of those people who smoked and smoked weed and got no response until I'd done it about 10 times. (A less persistent type would have given up!) I was smoking and inhaling correctly. I'd learned how to do that with cigarettes, which I thought were glamorous in those days. I simply didn't get high until I'd had some repeated exposure to external cannabinoids.

i didn't get high the first 3 times i smoked. but when it happened, it was friggin magical. i vividly remember the moment i became stoned for the first time.
I always figured i wasn't inhaling deeply enough those first tries.
