I have a question regarding the proper way (if there is one) to light a joint. I usually smoke out of a pipe or a bong, and the weed I get tends to be rather dense and sticky. I don't smoke joints very often, but once in a while I like to try something different for variety's sake.

Since I've been rolling ciggerretes for several years now, I've got a pretty good handle on rolling properly. However, I noticed that when I roll a joint with just weed, I need to light it like you would light a cigar, by holding the flame about 1/4 inch away and taking gentle puffs in order to properly get an even light. If I try and touch the flame to the joint directly, instead of lighting the joint it just burns the paper around the joint, and the weed inside simply flames up and burns without me being able to draw properly and inhale.

My question is, is this normal, or am I doing something wrong that would cause me to have to light the joint like a cigar? My concern is that I enjoy smoking outside, and it is very difficult to light a joint outside without the joint simply being destroyed by the flame. In addition, I don't have a grinder, so I usually just crumble the weed as best as I can by hand, so would this have anything to do with the joint not wanting to light by a direct flame? Or does it have more to do with my weed being either too sticky or too dense?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
