I think face to face is better than IM'ing. I know I'm a little late in responding and you have moved on already but I feel like adding my two cents . I think most women find it cute when a guy is shy or nervous. You really should've asked her out for a cup of coffee or something (so she doesn't feel like it's a date). It's always nice to meet new people.

Like you said though, if it was meant to be, you'll see her around again.
