COOLTUBE!!!!!!
Heya ronjon,
I've never done a cooltube before but as requested I'm stopping in to say hey... I was thinking if you had access to some glass-cutting equipment you could get one of those glass jars that's the right dimensions to store pasta, and cut the bottom off. You can use a Dremel tool, but you have to do it under water or at least wet or it will crack and the wheel will burn up too fast.
I tried emailing you.. I'll try again!
ps big thanks for the amen thread... my head is getting big though, lol!

COOLTUBE!!!!!!
.
I bought a hurricane lamp today and have been mucking about with the glass on a 250HPS.
The jury is still out on this one.
God knows how to fasten the fan to the hood though.

Hmmm, the trouble is, I want to attach it to my 400W, and that one weighs a ton already, what with the ballast being built in.
To add even more weight seems like begging for the whole thing to come crashing down.
Guess I'll have to look into rebuilding the whole thing, and seperate the ballast from the hood.

COOLTUBE!!!!!!
Oh yeah seriously get that ballast off there; better still, get it OUT of your grow room unless you use it as a heater ( as I do in winter). And don't be surpriseed if that makes all the temp difference you need- no more screwing around with kitchen wares

No, the ballast is not a real heat problem. My 250HPS has a seperate ballast and I'm at roughly the same temps with my 400W, a degree or 2 more.
I'm not having temp probs per se, but I would like to get down from 27 -28 at 40cm's height, to 25C at 25 cm...
I'd also like to be able to stuff both the 250w and the 400w together.
Anyway, will buy cord to rebuild the 400W casing, and another exhaust fan for the tube and see what happens.
A test run with the 250W seems to reduce heat quite well, though not completely.
The bottom side of the glass remained cool, but the top, the part closest to the reflector was hot.
A stronger fan than the one I used will be needed, I think.

you could just buy this: http://www.wormsway.com/detail.asp?sku=MT118
it's about $120 including shipping
and this: http://www.plantlightinghydroponics....er-p-1558.html
it's uder $100
with a 1kw hps the best thing to do, if you are trying to use it in a small space, is to buy the best possible cooling equipment as you can as to insure that you will not just be wasting you time with a space that's way to hot for growing. with that exact fan and tube i was able to have a 1kw hps in a closet that was only 4ft wide by 22inches deep by just under 7 feet tall with temps never exceeding 81F. of course the ballast was not in the closet.
your next problem is going to be lightproofing that closet. try hanging a thick dark colored tapestry or curtain over the outside of the closet door(fabrics inside would be an extreme fire hazard) and that should help. you can also get some weather stripping and put it around the door and casement to futher help block out the light. good luck.

COOLTUBE!!!!!!
Michael's Arts and Crafts stores carry the glass I used in my D.I.Y tube, Ronjohn. The one near me had a wide assortment of sizes and shapes.
