fikusroot Reviewed by fikusroot on . Frank Zappa i only have one of his albums(Apostrophe'/Overnight Sensation), and the music is okay when your sober, but when your high, it tells a whole different story. the story is completley random. when your high, it makes sense. anyone else like him? Don't forget Beefheart and Zappa's "HOT RATS".

Although I never saw him with the Mothers, I did see Zappa him shortly after they disbanded, in New York.

I saw Beefheart at Town Hall in NYC, early 70's. Bob Segar, unknown at the time, was the opening act for one of the shows (don't remember which). The concerts were a year apart. The album was "Clear Spot" for one of them.

At one of the performances, he got heckled and given the finger because some members of the audience were disappointed with his performance. He said, onstage, during a number, "You can do THIS" (giving the middle finger), "But can you do THIS?", and proceeded to blow a virtuoso blues harp solo.

The message of "Clear Spot" was anti-drug, BTW. I â??freaked-outâ?? at that show due to some heavy shit Iâ??d had, but was OK in the morning. The worst part was going home on the subway. I was really spaced, and remember asking one couple in the train station, who also had been at the show, â??Did you see what he did?"

    That was something, lol!

no bootlegs. a handful of live albums, guitar compliations, a best of and about 10 posthumous. add that to the 40 or so studio albums and viola. 75. i dont even have any of the "beat the boots" compilations zappa put out himself to stop the rampant bootlegging.

The song "Willie The Pimp", on Hot Rats, was sung by Beefheart.

Most people, even his fans, don't understand Zappa. He was a musical genius, humorist, and visionary. Not everything, or even most, of his output appeals to me, but I enjoy some of it immensely. He started Alice Cooper, used Stevie Vai on some of his later records, and countless other people were influenced by him. He basically was "strict" in a period of music that was very loose. He forced his musicains to be better disiplined, and therefore better players. He didn't play favorites - I remember he was on the outs with his friend Beefheart because of a musical problem, and wouldn't even talk to Eric Clapton for a long time - probably because of his (Clapton's) addiction(s).

I got to see him in the early 70's with Lee Michaels and of all bands, It's a Beautiful Day! Beautiful Day was awesome too but didn't quite set the tone for Zappa to come on and blast the auditorium for 3.5 hours! Even Lee Michaels was quite a stretch to be billed with Frank and most of the crowd had to wait patiently for the 1st two bands to finish before we got what we came for...and that pink tab thc sure didn't help the night...what crap that stuff was!
