Back then, everyone was self-sufficiant growing their own crops, and raising their own food, but today, there is no more open land. IF we come to that point again, what good is a 12 story office building going to do for us? Or a movie theatre?

We'd have to tear it all down and start again, and even then, it would be very hard to grow any source of food.
