How was the steriotype "stoner" invented?

I have met very few people that fall under the typical stoner steriotype. Most people are at least one steriotype, but this one just seems uncommon to me. It makes me wonder how did people come up with a steriotype that isn't even commonly true.

And I am the steriotypical fat kid lol. Last friday i went out with some friends to this spot in the woods. i sat down and heard marshmellows and they talked and he told me to look in the trunk. I went and looked and there were no marshmellows. I went back and told him and they had asked me to see if there was enough wood for the fire.... And later that day they were talking about putting up a tent and jared asked aroun to go up to the house and get some steaks, then when he got back i learned he had meant stakes. And I was looking forward to eating that too

    Stereotypes usually aren't true.

Women aren't stupid, men aren't all sex addicts, asians are no worse at driving than any other asshole on the roads, black men don't have bigger d... ok that one may be true...

The fact is most of the stereotypes are bullshit. Watch a movie about South US, most people down here aren't like that. I hate stereotypes.

Now listen hare lil' misser. I living in the bee-uteaful state of tennessee an' I can personaly(put special accent on the letters "on") say that the suthern steriotype is completly (slur the letters "ple") readiculus. I have had more edjumacation than all my brothers and sisters. Just because my aunt is also my cousin and my neice also my great grand son does not mean we is all inbred rednecks.

Lol actually the redneck steriotype is pretty common down here. By all means not all of us. But still pretty damn common.

Your aunt and cousin are the same person too. God it is a small world. You know what is funny though, there are towns around where I live that people will not date anyone from that town. Chances are they may be related. Usually not closley, but it is all one blood line for the most part in a few areas around where I live.

Everyone thinks I'm gay because I have long hair and I'm a guy, just because the current 'fad' is have short hair or a bowl cut(which I've have had since I was a kid) mainly no other guy has long hair. But it doesn't bother me, because I know different.
The town I live in thinks richer kids are smarter than the kids who live in Government homes, which is ludacris.
You just have to learn to deal with the world, good and bad.

I know the feeling man, I have long hair too and have to put it in a pony tail for work. People tend to look at me a little funny, I actually had someone ask me, so I told them to fuck off.

i don't know about the sterotype but i have a good idea where stoned or stoner comes from... because the sterotype for us is that we sit there and do absolutely nothing all day... like a stone... as for sterotypes, maybe 20, 30 years ago sterotypes worked.. i can't say for sure as i wasn't alive back then, but these days, all the cultures mixed there is not even one sterotype that holds true to everyone (or even most) except that we live and we die, which isn't really a sterotype, just more of a fact...

I think perhaps media and entertainment portrayals have helped perpetuate the stoner "myth." In my lifetime, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong helped add to the stereotype. For that matter, so did Wayne and Garth, now that I think about it. There've also been an awful lot of musicians and artistic types who've helped as well, but most of them, like Willie Nelson, for instance, just really seem more like laid-back, nice people who like to smoke weed rather than stereotypical stoners.
