We used to have a lot more time balancing both families at holidays when our son was young and everyone was eager to clock holiday time with "the baby." He's my parents' only grandchild and my in-laws' only grandson. It felt challenging to be pulled in both directions. My in-laws live in Houston, and my family is right up here nearby in the Dallas area like we are. We used to switch years for Christmas celebrations--one year in Dallas, then the next in Houston, and Thanksgiving was spent with whoever we weren't going to be spending Christmas with. Fortunately, these days my in-laws can drive or fly up here anytime they want, and now our son can do the same and go see them when he wants. Still, we see more of my family simply because they're closer. These days at Christmastime, we generally combine both sets of parents. The Houston clan comes up here and stays for a bit and we add them to the family gatherings involving my family. It works out fine. They all get along well.
