It helps. When I added some sidelighting (eight 30-watt CFLs), my yields went up about a quarter pound, in a space about 20" x 47", 6' tall, augmenting a 400w light. The difference wasn't all that much visually, but it showed up on the scale, which is what really matters.

The main light is a 600 watt hps grow lux overhead right now. the space is a 2x ~3.5 and lined with white paint. I have a 40 watt 2 bulb 4 foot shop light lighting from one corner and I have 2 40 watt cfls 5600k and a 1 foot grow light that could also be thrown in the mix.
