1000 Watt HPS Light
Hey guys.. I'm planning on growing in a few months when I get my own place.. A buddy from school wants to sell me a 1000 watt HPS Light for $230.. which is a good price for that type of light.
I know it comes with its own generator but you still have to hook it up to a jack? Hopefully it won't affect my hydro bill too much.. Anybody know anything about this light..? why or why not should I buy it?Aly_G Reviewed by Aly_G on . 1000 Watt HPS Light Hey guys.. I'm planning on growing in a few months when I get my own place.. Doesn't come with a generator... the box is a ballast.
Find out how many hours are on the bulb, what's the brand, etc.

Lucky you then, a good generator runs in the thousands! It's the one thing really missing from my grow in case of a power outage.

you think it'll show in the hydro bill too much?
he said without a generator the bill would skyrocket.. which obviously I don't want cause cops could find out.. but then it won't be much of a difference with a generator?

You will have to pay for fuel. Be careful to run the generator properly exhausted. If you're on a generator you don't plug into the wall socket, you plug into the generator.

Apparently what it has is a battery to boost it so it doesn't just use the energy from the house.. he said if I used 1000 watts from just my house it would cost an extra $60 a month.. I guess a lot less with a battery.

I would get your friend to send you a picture of what it is he is selling you, Then we can all better help you as well you can better help yourself. Like stinky said a generator is mad expensive and runs on GAs. well most of them.
You were mentioning somthing about a battery and stuff. Which would leave me to believe that it is a UPS also known as a power conditioner and or surge protector. They can come with a battery in it so when the power goes out in your house. From say a lightning storm. The UPS takes over and electricy still will flow. For a limited amount of hours. I ahve never read about or seen models that take electricy then charge a battery so your using less wattage? but they may exist.
Its a good thing to have cuz it helps maintain steady current to in your case your new HPS Light. It will also prevent it from shorting out if too much energy is sent through your house.
I use them at the Studio I work at to protect the Avid computers and Pro Tools rigs. These computers cost anywhere from 20,000 to 250,000 with all the cards and Expansion chases. 1000 bucks for a good UPS saves us in the end if the building gets hit by lightning, faces a power outage or power surge.
in a power outage when the power comes back on. A jolt of more wattage can be sent out your socket and fry some electronics. ie. your light or in my case the computers.
Justa bit off topic but some people might care to know...

Depending on where you live it would be around 20 - 27 dollars a day per 1000 watts.
I pay around .059 cents per kilowatt hour, my HPS uses about 1075 watts to run the light per hour, im really stoned and tired but below would be the math.
30(.059 x 12) 21.24$ per 30 days
30(.059 x 18) 31.86$ per 30 days.
If you turn your fridge on really low, and quit opening it so much. Dont use 1/2 the lights you don't use, since you really don't need em. Don't sleep with the tv or radio on, and do laundry at the laundry mat. Also be very careful with hot water, a hot water heater can use like 5000 watts per element easy....
I promise you friend if you do what I describe in the last paragraph you will probably have a SMALLER electric bill after you are being more aware of standard electrical usage / cost since your lights are on and you would like to stay " down low ".
Peace and Best Wishes
Ps Generators and Batteries suck to maintain. A good ballast isnt much more than 250$
