    How to properly sample bud...

Many people talk about the flavor and aroma of a bud, however few people know the proper method for testing the flavor of a bud. While potency can be easily tested, flavor, and aftertaste a bit harder to do. One of the best ways to properly sample a bud is to grind the bud in a grinder and put the ground bud into a a clean paper, preferably pure hemp. Try not to touch the bud very much as sweat and other fluids secreated by the body alter the taste and smoke. Get a wood match stick, a fireplace stick is best, and strike it. DO NOT light the tip immediately but let it burn down till it is at least a 1/4 of the way down the stick to let the chemical accelerants along the tip burn out. Now light your joint and sample your bud. French hitting or exhaling through your nostrils is the best way to get a accurate sample of the flavor. Never give someone a taste feedback when using a butane lighter cause the taste will be altered. Also, testing with a bowl or bong is also unwise as you have to always relight the bud and you will always get a chemical flavor. The only way to test buds flavor in a bowl or bong is with solar lighting. Solar lighting, for those who don't know, is where you take a magnifying lens, glass preferably, and focus the light onto a single point. This is very similar to burning ants and if you have done so you should know how to do this method best. By doing this you are promised a smooth, clean smoke till the last toke.

By far these two methods listed above are the best way to sample the flavor of a bud and are also more healthy than enhaling some nasty butane. Hope this was informational.

Lol, butane always leaves a taste. Its a chemical and you are inhaling it. The method I described is a way to get a as close to clean flame as possible. Wood being burned is the cleanest fire you can use when burning your herb. Of course, vaporizing wins hands down on healthyness but most of us are not so fortunate to own one.

I respectfully disagree. Butane burns much hotter than a wooden match and as a result, the fuel is more completely consumed by the flame and fewer harmful by-products are released into the inhaled smoke. Plus, the fuel is mechanically vaporized rather than being chemically vaporized, as in a match. By-products of a butane flame are predominantly carbon dioxide and water vapor; both of which are quite normal occupants of human lungs. Inhaled by-products of a wooden match include nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, and various hazardous organic compounds. In order for the wood in the match to burn, it must be heated to the point that it gives off flammable vapors which will support combustion. This is a chemical process that produces a lot more chemical by-products than a butane lighter that vaporizes the fuel through a mechanical nozzle.

The amount of inhaled contaminants from a flame is directly related to the temperature at which the flame burns. Butane lights produce flames with much tighter temperature tolerances than a wooden match. A low-burning match produces a lot of unburned by-products that are not good for the human body.

Whichever you use, you will inhale fewer unburned contaminants with a hotter flame than you will with a cooler flame. Using the heat from the flame to heat your substance will also reduce the number of contaminants you inhale. Tilting your bowl and sucking in heat from the side of the flame, for example, is preferable to sucking the top of the flame (where all the contaminants are in the middle of their chemical processes) into the bowl. Also, it is best to remove the flame while it is still burning rather than have it go out while still inhaling.

    Happy toking to you, too!

the butane only affects the first drag, not that it tastes of anything anyway...
a zippo lighter...they do tase nasty if you inhale as your lighting up.

the best way is to blow back or chug the first few tokes untill its lit properly, then just smoke as normal.

This is an interesting thread, and not just because it made me want to go skin up! :rastasmoke:

I have to agree that a butane lighter tastes less than matches. I don't think anyone is silly enough to light their joint with the sulfur burning full force... if they are it's a mistake they won't make more than once! What other chemicals do they use in matches? I wasn't aware that the wood had any chemicals in the 1/4 near the head to help it stay lit at first. If that's true, which brands of matches do you know contain those chemicals? What about those shitty paper-like matches that everyone should hate? Those often have a visible coating near the head.

Anyone who tells you that you cannot taste matches or butane does not have a sensitive tongue / throat. I think butane tastes less, but this is a matter of taste so it is completely subjective. I think the best suggestion so far is to hold the top of the flame several centimetres below the joint. I like to take a few pulls to get a real taste anyway so even if the first one tastes a bit off the rest should be clean and nice (imho).
