it's a tube, that has both ends open and on the side there's a bowl near one end, you stick the bowl end farthest from your mouth, cover up the end with your palm and light it, when you feel smoke entering your lungs, you remove your hand from the end (you still have to hold the steamroller, i don't think i really need to say that, but just incase ) and a tube full of thick ass smoke goes pouring into your lungs... i usually go for the unclearable ones, my brother had one made out of a mag light, don't know if it was the size, or how much smoke the bowl produced, but no one could clear it, many many many tried, but all failed.

those are actually small compared to what i'm used to, those seem to be about 8 inches or so, my steam roller was well over 18, before i shortened it up with a hacksaw (it was made from an old timey vacuum cleaner, back when they came with metal hose attatchments instead of plastic)
