dude, alcohol...rubbing alcohol....alcohol prep pads...they clean glass pipes good, bong, lil one hitters, whatever...alcohol works.....salt too!

Yeah alcohol works great. I usually soak my pipe in an alcohol water mixture, and that softens the resin. Then I take a stick (like a kabob skewer or something) and scrape up all the resin. Works for me!

And as far as pipes and bongs, I'd say bongs get you more high. And bongs cool the smoke down, making hits easier on your throat and lungs. But pipes are still better than joints. At least your fingers don't get all stinky after smoking pipes (they do after joints).
