Tool lied to me.
The following is directed to musical artist "Tool" fans only.
I used to love tool, cause it was all like "fuck you buddy!" and "i like heroin!" and "YARR LOUD YELLING AND SCREAMING!". And I was all, "my parents hate this, this is awesome."
Then they come out with Lateralus, and it was slower, and more complex, and I was older, and growing up. and I'm thinking, "trying to listen to Lateralus is like playing a game of chess with your ear drums."
Then they finish it off with 10000 days, and i'm telling all my friends that the album is nothing but native american chants, pointless fillers, and a track about some guy on acid. And i believed that for a long time. Then I got bored of Lateralus, and I realised 10000 days is pretty complex in its own right. It too, can be like listening to an aural game of chess.
So I start doing some research on the lyrics, and I quickly fall in love with 'right in two'. After listening often enough, there is one part near the end where a little chime in the left ear channel completely trips me out. TOOL MUSIC GETS ME HIGH. For those 3 seconds when they play that chime, i completely dissociate just like i was on shrooms. For 3 seconds. For free. EVERY SINGLE TIME. No matter what i've been doing that day.
And finally, I read the lyrics for "Intension". They said something backwards. Reversed, it goes like this:
"Work hard, Stay in school, Listen to your mother, your father is right, son... Jesus loves you..."

Tool lied to me.
I actually heard that Maynard became quite religious during the Lateralus album. That doesn't bother me as he doesn't sing about how much he loves god and such, despite a few lines.
A lot of people I have talked hate 10,000 days and I call them crazy. I agree, the fillers are a bit much, but the album from start to finish, is like listening to a story. Every song is a story and it is quite interesting lyric wise. He puts things in perspective and ways that make me think, "wow, I never thought of it THAT way." The music is genuis, pure talent loaded with polyrhythems which are impossible to translate and figure out.
I personally love their new stuff, I think it is amazing. I guess you have to be a musician to truely understand the complexity of their music.

i love tool. maynard is genius and seriously mentally tilted i think. to appreciate tool you need to read the lyrics for all the songs your listening to because a lot fo the stuff i wouldnt have known without verifying it. and remember the capacity of the songs is amazing. theres so many different way of looking at the songs in so many different contexts. they are just so complex and i love them and i cant wait till the next album!

Tool lied to me.
I love Tool, but I don't think Maynard is a genius. He's just not an idiot.
I think they just sound really smart compared to 99.8% of contemporary rock bands out there these days. If anyone in the band is a genius, it's Danny Carrey. Sweet baby jesus can that boy drum.
