I do admit to making generalizations about members of congress. The thing is...a large portion of them are generally bad people.

A couple well known racists:

Congressman Jefferson from LA's 2nd House district: "He is currently the subject of a corruption probe, and in May 2006 his Congressional offices were raided, as well as his home in Northeast Washington, where, the FBI alleged, they 'found $90,000 of the cash in the freezer, in $10,000 increments wrapped in aluminum foil and stuffed inside frozen-food containers'." *copied from wikipedia
This scandal was just the tip of the ice burg for him, but the brilliant people in New Orleans continued to vote for him, he received the most votes in the 06 election and will likely win the run-off which will occur soon.

Congresswoman McKinney from GA: I don't think it is necessary to list any of her outlandish claims or scandals...she lost this last election by about 13,000 votes, in her concession speech she cited racism, voter fraud, and the media which she believes is dominated by Jewish interests. The first time that Ms. McKinney was voted out of office her father who at the time was a member of the GA state legislature offered his opinion on why his daughter had lost, "Jews have bought everybody - J-e-w-s"

A couple well known elitists:

Ted Kennedy MA: In 1969, he attended a large party in the area of Martha's Vineyard, MA. He left the party with a girl he had met, Mary Jo Kopechne. (keep in mind teddy was married at the time) Apparently, Mr. Kennedy was unable to navigate to his destination and ended up driving his car off of a bridge. Kennedy managed to save himself, and fled the scene. He made it back to the party where he made several phone calls, before eventually calling the police over 10 hours later. The entire time, Kennedy's "date" was at the bottom of Poucha Pond trapped inside of his Oldsmobile.

John Kerry, MA: a poster boy for elitism, has been involved in a few skirmishes which accurately portray him as the smug bastard that he is outside of his public life....one example would be his apology for his comment about the education of our servicemen. Another would be when Kerry, while snow skiing, collided with a secret service agent who had been assigned to protect him. Kerry responded when asked if he had fallen: "I don't fall...that Son of a Bitch ran into me.." the exact quote is disputed, but the fact that Kerry thinks so highly of himself is not.

Patrick Kennedy, Rep. from RI: a self proclaimed drug addict and alcoholic. Kennedy drove his mustang into a wall earlier this year...no consequences followed. In 2000 he rented a boat, nearly sunk it, and just abandoned it with $28,000 worth of damage. While addressing a group of College Democrats he revealed that he had "never worked a fucking day in his life." Although Patches is apparently on a leave of absence from the congress pending rehab, he was reelected in 2006 with 69% of the vote.

I don't know much about state legislatures outside of Texas, but I would guess that they are as equally corrupt as the federal level. And although I only listed Dems, corruption is on both sides of the aisle. I listed only the most famous altercations these people have had with their constituency and yet they still managed to get reelected.
