Rough estimate on cost involved with a small closet grow

I plan on using a 400w hps bulb .. other than that as far as the cost of nutrients, materials for the housing, supplies, seeds .. etc etc ..

I'll also throw in that personally I'm not going for the top of the line stuff but i'm not settling for a poor grow .. i want the stuff right in the " middle " as far as cost/performance.

This is a small grow for just myself and a few buds .. nothing huge needed ...

Seeds: It all depends on the strain. Some cost more than others, but for starters, I suggest using bagseed, or, getting from a low cost seed dealer like Nirvana, so, for seeds, anywhere from free bagseed to $100.

Nutes, soils: Buy a big bag of soil, like, 15L bag, for about $5 or so. Nutes are something you don't have to buy all the time. I've had the same container of nutes that I started with, and I still use it, so 2 or 3 diff. kinds of nutes, anywhere from $10-$50. I suggest you use a medium or soil mixture of your choice to lighten the soil. Use Vermiculite or Perlite. A bag will cost you $3 or so.

Lighting: A 400W hps setup will run you at least $250.

Materials: It all varies. You WILL need a fan or 2 to keep things cool, and possibly and intake/outake fan as well to keep temps low, so anywhere from $50-$200 I'm guessing.

I'm planning on going with a first grow of Northern Lights ( beginner-friendly, small height, low smell ... plus that high ) ... seen a bag of 10 go for $15 from Nirvana ... heard decent reviews, will try them out.

As for fans, I have them covered .. I'm just researching what the best housing would be for the plants ...

Please define "small closet grow."

I don't know how big your closet is, but the average closet doesn't need anything more than 4 fluoro tubes, 4 feet in length. With that, you can grow 6 plants in 1 gallon pots. Force them to flower when they are about 12 inches tall and they will finish at about 24 inches tall, loaded with frosty buds.

You won't be growing 6-foot-tall monster plants. You won't get a pound or more off your plants, but you'll be getting the same quality high, and enough of it to last until your next harvest if you plan it out.

Start your next group of seeds while your plants are flowering. That way, as soon as you harvest you will already have new seedlings ready to move in. Or even better, make clones.

If you got the money I would suggest a metal or wood storage cabinet....I picked one up from office max for a buck fifty, 6' tall, 30" wide and it has a lock.....Has up to 600 watts of lights, exhaust fan and room for 2-3 good sized plants....total cost so far about $350 and took 4-5 hrs to assemble.
