It will either show pre-flowers during veg or you'll have to wait til you start flowering it to tell. Hairs = female, balls = male. I suggest you do a LOT of reading if this is your first grow. I'm on my first grow too, but I read everything I could for months before starting, and everything is going pretty well.

once you start to flower and it really depends on the strain for how smelly it will be

a lot of strains smell in veg. my buddy claims they smell up his whole room with only small vegging plants. but i have larger plants and they dont smell much at all.

but yea flowering is the problamatic smell stage
