Proper LST'ing

O.k., incase you don't know in my last thread which I didn't get much replies on stated that I will be doing an outdoor grow next year. Now, I don't know about the smell but what ever but I'm almost certain that those plants are probably going to get taller than the gate blocking the view of the plant. My question now is how will I go about properly tying my plant down without damaging it to keep it from reaching the top of the gate?

yea im also very curious about this becuase when i grow it will be in a limited indoor space, so i want a bushy plant with multple colas..if anyone has a step by step or just simpe guidelines to the proper technique that would be awsome!

LST'ing isn't as hard as it sounds. Just make sure you always counter-tie your stem first, otherwise you could uproot your plants. In other words, if you're bending it over to the left, you want a loop about 2-3 inches above the ground pulling the plant back to the right. This lets you bend it without it trying to pull on the roots. Other than that, the plant is pretty forgiving, you can man-handle them from what I've found as long as you don't try and put too sharp of a bend in the stem, they won't break. Just remember, its a plant, its not going anywhere, so you can tie it down slowly if it won't bend the way you like it at first. Fuck, I could probably write my name in cursive with a stem I had the time and felt the need lol.


The 1 key to LST'ing is making sure you bend it so that everything gets light. Outside this isn't as much of a problem.

Best way I found though is to top the plant first, when it's about 4-5 inches tall, then tie it down. Makes for the most even canopy. Outside though, I dunno if topping would be necessary. Experiment and find out what works for you. If you want some practice, start tying down some of you mom's plants around your house and see how they respond lol. I personally am fascinated by LST'ing because its more hands on than most growing. Each plant is unique, so figuring out what shape it wants to be tied in is part of the fun. Here's a pic of one that was topped then tied (1st one) and one that wasn't topped (well, until recently, all the tops that formed from the LST'ing were subsequently topped and tied also) The original top of the main stem is in the top left corner, kinda above that towel on the ground. Its been bent like crazy.

I'd suggest topping once and then LST'ing. Then once the new tops grow up from the sides, you can LST them too, and they will behave just like the main cola did when you tied it down. Pretty cool. I can count like 48 growing tips on that plant in the second pic from where the new tops that formed were FIM'ed/ topped then LST'd.

well peeps
here is what i do
firstly make sure that the plant is healthy enuff to take the lst'ing
then take the branches that ya want tying down and bend them as far down as ya can without snapping them, then tye down with some string or whateva ya are gonna use keeping it in that position
if the bent branches that ya have just done arent bent enuff
you can pinch the branch slightly to maximise the bend
by pinching the branch i mean
take the branch in between ya forefinger and thumb and gently roll it like rolling a sausage backward and forwards untill the branch weakens and becomes more bendy
bare in mind this could take a week to properly heal in the new position
and the pinched bend once healed will look like a bubble but this is totally fine

I just tie my plant on the side to expose the growth shoots to the light.
Then just keep tying the growth shoots down trying the maximize the number of growth tips that recieve light.
It doesn't happen overnight...it takes a while before the growth tips become big like the main growth tip.
You must also be very gentle. It is very easy to snap a stem if your not careful or stoned.

The method has worked successfully for me.

I'm not necessarily wondering how the tie the plant down, it's pretty simple to tie something down lol. But I guess I was wondering what material would I use and how would I go about tying it to something and then tying it to the plant?

yeah...like a tent....with metal stakes....some thin rope...a slipknot or simply loop de loop
you wont have to tie them down as much because sunlight penetrates the canopy very well
