I also will be voting for them next time. I was quite pleasantly surprised getting a reply in the mail and even more surprised to find out they wernt against cannabis. i am just about to go type the other 2 pages out on word then copy and paste here. Also lets me keep a copy on my HD just in case i lose the printed out copy i received. I will post it later hopefully might take me a while to type it out though.

After reading the 2 pages of the Lib Dems policy again i aint to sure if its good or bad. You decide. It took me an hour & half to type this so hope its informative let me know if it indeed is good or bad. LOL. Bit stoned at the mo so i will post it in its own post after this one k.

Drug Law Reform

The proabitionist approach to drugs over the last year has not worked. According to the 2003 British Crime Survey, 12% of adults took an illegal drug in the previous year and 3% took a Class A drug. This means there are four million drug users & a million hard drug users in the UK. The number of heroin addicts in the UK is estimated to be over a quarter of a million. Aside from the health and social problems drug abuse creates for the users themselves, hard drugs are a huge factor in causing other crimes. It has been estimated drug related property crime accounts for stolen goods of over £2 billion in value.
Liberal Democrats believe the current emphasis on criminal sanctions for users actually makes the problem worse: It exacerbates the adverse consequences of drug use; it brings many young people, who would otherwise be law-abiding , into contact with both the criminal world and criminal justice system; it undermines more promising strategies for minimizing harmful drug use; and diverts large public resources witch could be better employed elsewhere.
Liberal Democrats believe the time has come to reform the approach to drugs policy, so there is an intelligent range of responses, with the emphasis on education, treatment for addiction and harm reduction strategies rather than blanket prohibition, but retaining criminal sanctions were justified.

We would take a honest, realistic and responsible to the drugs policy by:

1 Establishing a standing drugs commission to advise on drugs policy, with a remit extended to cover legal substances such as alcohol, solvents and tobacco. The commission would keep the classification of cannabis (along with other drugs) under review in the light of new scientific evidence as it emerged.

2 Requiring the drugs commission to also carry out regular audits of drugs policy, starting immediately, and with major reports every five years. The drugs commission would draw on the expertise of the National Audit Office in conducting the audit.

3 Seeking a Europe-Wide review of drugs policy every five years.

4 Calling for a review of the current 1988 UN Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances to allow more flexible policy.

Liberal Democrats would brake the links between cannabis use & organized crime by:

1 Maintaining the classification of cannabis as class c in the short term, issuing policy guidance that is not in the public interest to prosecute individuals for possession of cannabis for their own use, cultivation of small numbers of cannabis plants for there own use, or social supply of cannabis.

2 Permitting medical use of cannabis derivatives, subject to appropriate pharmaceutical controls and the successful conclusion of clinical trials.

3 In the longer term, seeking to put the supply of cannabis on a legal, regulated basis, subject to securing necessary renegotiations of the UN Conventions.

Liberal Democrats would reform unnecessary and counter productive criminal penalties by:

1 Ending the use of imprisonment as a punishment for possession for own use of illegal drugs of any class. Drug addicts wherever possible should be in treatment & not in prison unless they have committed other serious crimes (e.g. robbery to feed a crack cocaine habit) in witch prison must retain an option.

2 Reclassifying Ecstasy from class A to class B to reflect the fact it is less harmful than heroin & cocaine, but not reclassifying it further unless recommended by the Drugs Commission subject to evidence on long term health effects.

3 Amending of the misuse of drugs act 1971 as recommended by the report of the independent inquiry into the Act chaired by Dame Ruth Runciman, so that occupiers or managers of premises only commit a crime if they knowingly and willfully permit the supply or production of illegal drugs on those premises.

Liberal Democrats would promote a more effective policy to reduce drug dependency and its adverse consequences by:

1 Extending the use of drug treatment and testing as an alternative to other criminal sanctions.

2 Developing specialist heroin treatment clinics were heroin or heroin substitutes can be administered under controlled conditions, with other medical treatment and testing, and counseling and withdrawal programs available.

Liberal Democrats would crack down on illegal drug trafficking and drug affected driving by:

1 Introducing a new offence of `dealing` as recommended by the Runciman report to allow more effective action against those proved to be supplying illegal drugs over long periods of time.

2 Allowing the selling of drugs near schools, psychiatric facilities and other sensitive locations to be an aggravating factor in sentencing, as recommended by Runciman.

3 Launching a public information campaign on the dangers of drug affected driving, and encouraging the police to carry out roadside sobriety testing of suspected unfit drivers when appropriate.......

dunno about this though, lots of testing needed cannabis can stay in your system for up to 3 months! thats a long time not driving after a smoke, lol.

i suppose like drink driving you would have to have a certain percentage in the breath or blood, if it just went on having a trace in the system...well

it might be more environmentally freindly with 6 million tokers using public transport, or better................
