try mothballs, they work for other pest- put in a circle around your plants- do not put close though- right outside of root circle- you do not want the mothballs to disolve and your plants to pick them up

The moth ball solution is supposed to work really well for little mammal pests.
Also coffee grounds are a mammal repellent.

Now if we can only find a way to keep possums from becoming a pest on the forums.....

Get some chili or cayenne pepper powder. A nose full of chili pepper is a great deterant. Just sprinkle it heavily all around your plants (I don't think I'd want any actually ON the plants)- it won't hurt your pot. You will have to renew it when it rains and whenever you check your plants. Friend of mine used to buy the stuff at the Dollar Store in these 1 lb. containers (you should have seen the looks when she'd buy a dozen or more pounds of cayenne pepper- LOL). She would sprinkle it liberally on her garbage to keep the bears out of the trash cans. The bears quickly learned that her garbage wasn't tasty and would check out the next cabin instead!
